Documents

Documents capture the reasoning and research that inform your Storyform. They live under the gradient arc because they exist in the realm of subtext—clarifying why a particular Storypoint, Throughline, or Character choice belongs in your narrative.

Documenting your decisions

  • Collect evidence – Paste excerpts, research notes, or brainstorming snippets that justify each structural decision. Subtxt keeps them linked to the Storypoints they support.
  • Record rationalizations – Write out the logic that connects a choice to the larger story argument. Future-you (and collaborators) will appreciate the context when revisiting the project.
  • Track alternatives – When you consider multiple options for a beat or Signpost, Documents provide space to save the discarded ideas and the reasoning you used to select the final path.

How Documents interact with storytelling

Documents do not publish directly to your audience, but they are the foundation for everything you Surface later. When you step into Overviews or Storytelling:

  1. The app references your documents to keep summaries accurate.
  2. NarrativeSync flags areas where the explanation in your documents conflicts with a new storytelling choice.
  3. You can jump back into a document to update the rationale whenever new inspiration strikes.

NOTE

Treat Documents as a living archive of your story brain. The clearer you capture your thinking now, the easier it becomes to adjust Storypoints without losing sight of what you are trying to say.
